A Blessed Life
Della Gaskill, who grew up on Ocracoke, remembers what it was like in those earlier days, and she loves to tell stories about her memories.  In her book, A Blessed Life Growing Up on Ocracoke Island, she provides a fascinating glimpse into the past.  As Della looks back across the years she often slips back into the dialect of her childhood, reminiscent of old Ocracoke.

Ocracoke in the Fifties

Ocracoke in the Fifties

By Dare Wright, model, fashion photographer, & children's author ("The Lonely Doll," "Holiday for Edith & the Bears," etc.), "Ocracoke in the Fifties" is Wright's only book for adults.  In print for the first time, this book is a tribute to one of Dare's favorite places.  It is also a time capsule of a unique island culture just past the midpoint of the twentieth century.  And surprisingly, it is a testament to the timelessness of Ocracoke.

116 pages with text & dozens of vintage photos (people, ponies, hotels, fishing boats, graveyards, sandy paths, & public buildings).

Ocracoke The Pearl of the Outer Banks

Pearl of the OBX

Ocracoke: The Pearl of the Outer Banks, the fourth book in Ray McAllister's award-winning North Carolina coastal series, is a look at the history, the people and the continuing allure of the remote, white-sanded island that draws tens of thousancs of tourists each year.

Ocracoke tells the island's story from the early days of Native Americans and European explorers to today's artists, musicians, fisherman and bicycle-riding tourists. Along the way, it shares the stories of Blackbeard the Pirate's bloody demise, German U-boat attacks off Ocracoke's coast, and the role of the iconic 1823 Ocracoke Lighthouse.

Here, too, are portraits of ferries full of visitors, a legendary herd of once-wild ponies, miles of nationally honered beaches, the charmingly unpaved Howard Street and the poignantly serene British Cemetery - along with the inside stories of what draws families back year after year, generation after generation.

Hatteras Island- Keeper of the Outer Banks

KeeperoftheOBX

In Hatteras Island : Keeper of the Outer Banks, award-winning coastal writer Ray McAllister returns to the site of his family's annual vacations a quarter-century ago. Much has changed on Hatteras. But even more has not. Elswhere, fast-food restuarants, strip malls, and beach-dominating duplexes have overcome resort islands. But the storm-buffeted Hatteras-as much as 30 miles from mainland and largely protected against intruders by national seashore status-has kept its soul.

Hatteras Island also includes the stories of fisherman, tourists, surfers, beachgoers, historians, and Hatteras families who have lived here for generations and others who hold dear this islant constantly being redefined by wind and wave.

Paws and Tales

PawsandTales

Set on Ocracoke Island, Paws and Tales is an endearing story told in the words of Kali, a sailboat cat, and Harvey, an island dog. When Kali sails into the Ocracoke harbor with her person Sam, she senses that something unusual is about to happen. When a goofy but loveable Doberman pinscher called Harvey chases her off the edge of a dock, she finds herself adrift in an underworld of homeless cats, while Harvey and his person Emily ruefully regret the whole incident. What follows changes the lives of them all. Paws and Tales is sure to bring a smile to the face of anyone who enjoys dogs, cats, island life, sailing, mystery, romance and homespun effots to protect our planet. In spite of its whimsical nature, it has a strong message about living a simple, caring life, fighting for what one believes in, and not judging others simply because they are different (in this case, the dogs and cats).

Ocracoke Odyssey

OcracokeOdyssey

When Pat Garber first arrived at Ocracoke on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1984, she was seeking refuge from a painful divorce. She settled into a primitive cottage by the sound and began to renew her spirit. A year and a half later, she left to take a teaching job in Arizona. After 5 years, she returned to Ocracoke to stay. She conducted enviromental kayak trips into the marshes and became a wildlife rehabilitator and a National Park Service volunteer.

Readers who were enchanted with her intimate encounters with Ocracoke's wild creatures in her first book, Ocracoke Wild, will rejoice anew at this continuing glimpse into her life and the fascinating wild world that she has made her own.
